This post originally written for the spring 2013 advanced reporting blog.
I’m experiencing a great deal of beginning-of-the-semester optimism. Right now, I’m working on a story that’s slated to run next week, and while some of the details are still coming together, I feel good about my work and about being back in the newsroom.
Even so, I can already tell that aside from stepping up to tougher reporting projects, my primary challenge this spring will be learning to manage myself. For me, that means paying special attention to two things — managing my time and managing my fear.
Even though I’ve kept myself at 12 hours of coursework, I can already sense class, reporting and the rest of my life vying for my attention. My tendency is to throw myself fully into one area and not give the others the attention and time they deserve. I know I’ll have to fight to keep myself from putting off my work but also…
