Reporting

I currently report for the Telegraph Herald in Dubuque, Iowa, where I cover K-12 and higher education.

From August 2014 to April 2016, I wrote for The Joplin Globe, where I covered the communities in Newton County, Mo. During the spring semesters of 2012 and 2013, I reported for the Columbia Missourian. During that first stint, I wrote for the paper’s education beat. When I returned to the Missourian in 2013, I did so primarily as a feature writer. I further honed my reporting skills throughout college with summer internships at The Kansas City Star and the Telegraph Herald.

As a reporter, I value a careful attention to detail with an eye on engaging writing. Combine that with a passion for communities, and I’ve got a recipe for an exciting career ahead of me.

Here is some of my best work from my reporting experiences so far:

Local accident prompts mother of victim to fight for tougher laws (The Joplin Globe)

Flying outside the helicopter: A Leavenworth soldier’s story (The Kansas City Star; won 2nd Place, Best military story – Missouri Press Association Better Newspaper Contest 2015)

Former Picher residents return to ghost town for parade, reunion (The Joplin Globe)

I am currently working on a long-term project at the Telegraph Herald, for which I am following 20 students in the Class of 2020 through their four years of high school. Our website has a landing page set up with all of the stories, photos and videos that are part of the project.

Check out my work for the Class of 2020 project.

During my time at The Kansas City Star, I also produced a lengthy feature story for a regular news magazine published by the newspaper:

For For Johnson County’s volunteer firefighters, working in the fire service is a lifestyle (The Kansas City Star)
